Mindset and Performance Coach

Michael Glover writes about the unglamorous half of self improvement: the part after the motivation wears off.
Glover is a mindset and performance coach and a regular contributor to Goalcast, where he has spent years arguing against the thing most of his industry sells. His recurring target is hustle culture, the idea that achievement is always a grind and that if you are not exhausted you are not trying. He calls the alternative calculated hustle: get clear on the destination, take the path of least resistance toward it, and stop confusing suffering with progress.
His sharpest point is about discipline. Willpower, he argues, is the wrong tool, because willpower is a finite resource you spend. Discipline is an identity you adopt. You are not white knuckling one habit at a time; you are becoming the kind of person who follows through on what they said they would do, and that carries across every area of life at once. How you do one thing is how you do everything.
His work also appears on Tiny Buddha, which is where a lot of readers first find him.
We're stepping into the entire identity of being a disciplined person.
Michael Glover, writing for Goalcast
Glover's core distinction, willpower against identity, is the subject of Chapter 4 of Master Thyself, Games of the Mind. That chapter documents the machinery that keeps most adults running on autopilot: the reticular activating system, operant conditioning, confirmation bias, and the reason intelligent people defend beliefs they never actually chose. Glover's answer is to change the identity rather than fight the habit one morning at a time. The book agrees, and Chapter 22 is the protocol for doing it. Glover reached that conclusion through performance coaching. The book reaches it through the cognitive research and three thousand years of source texts, and lands in the same place.
